What Is DragonSword: Awakening?

DragonSword: Awakening is a single-player open-world action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5 by the Korean studio Hound13 Inc. The story follows Lute, a young swordsman who joins the mercenaries Johnny and Castella on a journey across the Continent of Orbis to confront a dragon that has woken after sixty years of sleep — a threat tied to the legacy of six ancient heroes.

What separates DragonSword: Awakening from most anime action RPGs is that you never fight as one character. You field a trio and swap between them mid-animation. Damage comes less from any single hero's combo and more from how cleanly you hand the fight from one hero to the next. That single design decision drives the team building, the gear priorities and the entire endgame, and it is the reason a "best character" list matters far less here than a working three-hero chain.

The game launched with 19 playable heroes, a full open world with cooking and puzzle content, collectible Familiars that double as mounts, and a 50-floor endgame tower. It is a buy-to-play title at $29.99 with cosmetic-only DLC — there is no gacha, no energy system and no paid power.

The Core Loop in 60 Seconds

Every fight in DragonSword: Awakening follows the same six beats. Learn this and the rest of the game opens up:

  1. Build an ailment. Attack with a fast hero until a status ailment gauge fills on the enemy — see status ailments.
  2. Wait for the prompt. A Signal Skill icon appears on the hero who can answer that ailment.
  3. Tag in. Swap to that hero and the incoming attack fires automatically as a high-damage opener — the full chain is covered in tag combos.
  4. Break the boss. Fill the Break gauge to interrupt attack patterns and open a punish window.
  5. Detonate. Your third hero extends the chain and converts the setup into burst damage.
  6. Reset stronger. Between fights, upgrade Karma on signature weapons and eat the right food buff.

Which Heroes Are Strongest Right Now?

On patch 1.0.x the consensus S-tier picks are Theresia, Reina, Cerese and Kalsion. Theresia has the highest ceiling and the highest execution cost; Reina is the most forgiving top-tier damage dealer thanks to her airborne pressure; Cerese and Kalsion anchor freeze and burn chains respectively.

Our DragonSword: Awakening tier list scores every hero on four separate axes — single target, area damage, crowd control and chain position — instead of publishing one blended letter grade, because a hero who is weak on paper is often mandatory as a chain link. Pair it with best team comps to see which trios actually function together.

Free DragonSword: Awakening Tools

Two planning tools that no other DragonSword: Awakening wiki currently offers:

  • Team Builder — tick the heroes you have actually unlocked and it checks whether your trio covers setup, break and burst, names the missing link, and suggests a rotation order.
  • Material Planner — enter what you currently hold and it works out how many Fragments of Afterimage you can craft, which of the three inputs is your bottleneck, and how many Tower runs the shortfall represents.

Both tools publish their formulas and the patch their numbers came from, and both ship a static lookup table underneath for anyone who would rather read the raw values.
